Common deck problems
Kansas City decks take hot sun, heavy rain, snow and freeze-thaw cycles, and pressure-treated pine and cedar both show it over time. Boards cup, split and go soft where water sits. Fasteners rust and back out. Railings loosen at the posts, which is the part of a deck that most needs to be solid. Stairs wear fastest, especially the treads and the connection at the top.
- Soft, spongy or cracked deck boards
- Railings that move when you lean on them
- Wobbly, cracked or uneven stairs
- Nails and screws popping up
- Gray, splintering wood that needs stain or sealer
What affects the price of a deck repair
A few photos of the problem areas, plus one of the whole deck and the stairs, let us quote most repairs before we visit.
- How many boards need replacing, and their length
- Railing and stair work, which takes more time per foot
- Decking material: pressure-treated, cedar or composite
- Height and access
- Whether you want stain or sealer after
How we repair decks
We replace damaged boards with matching material and fasten them with exterior-rated screws, which hold far better than the nails on many older decks. Railings get re-anchored to the posts with proper hardware, and loose or rotted balusters are replaced. On stairs we replace worn treads and tighten or rebuild the stringer connections. When we open things up, we look at the framing underneath. If we find rot in the joists, beams, ledger or footings, we show you photos and talk through the right fix, because structural problems shouldn't be patched over.
Repair, refinish or rebuild?
Most decks with solid framing are worth repairing and refinishing. New boards look brighter than old ones at first, so staining the whole deck after repairs makes it look uniform. If the framing is failing, a rebuild is the safer choice, and we'll be straight with you about that.

Questions we get
Anything else, call or text (816) 300-6444.
Do you rebuild decks?
We handle board, railing and step repairs. If the framing or footings need work, we'll show you what we found and talk through options.
Will new boards match?
New wood looks brighter at first. Staining the whole deck after repairs makes it blend.
When is the best time?
April through October, when the wood is dry enough to work and finish.
Can you replace boards with composite?
We can replace boards and stair treads with composite on a sound frame. Mixing composite with wood decking usually looks patchy, so we'll talk through options.
How long before I can stain new boards?
Pressure-treated lumber often needs to dry for weeks before stain will soak in. We'll tell you when it's ready.
Do you build new decks?
Not currently. We focus on repairs and refinishing.
